Normal use of a computer can lead to registry corruption, which in turn can lead to problems of all kinds.

The Windows registry is a very complex structure and when there is registry corruption, this affects the computer's performance. That is why a user needs to occasionally clean the registry.

What Is the Windows Registry?

The Windows registry is a database of entries and it contains all configuration information about everything on a computer – hardware, software, user preferences, etc. The Windows registry was introduced in 1995 and the idea was to replace all the .INI files, which then were used to keep configuration settings.

On one hand, the Windows registry makes it easier to keep computer configuration information in order because everything is gathered in one central place. On the other hand, when this central repository of entries gets corrupt, the results are devastating.

Why Does the Windows Registry Need Cleaning

Every time a new application is installed or uninstalled, this is written to the registry. Having in mind that many applications don't uninstall graciously – i.e. they leave a mess behind them – it is easy to imagine what happens after a user has installed and uninstalled five or ten such applications.

Spyware and adware also tend to sneak into the Windows registry and this also leads to registry corruption. Many legitimate applications also mess with the registry, thus also contributing to registry corruption.

At one point the Windows registry is so corrupted that Windows can't function properly. The computer becomes slow. In the worst cases it is even possible that a user will not be able to boot Windows at all. This is why it is important to clean the registry from time to time in order to prevent registry corruption.

How to Clean the Registry

One approach to cleaning the registry is to do it manually with a registry editor. However, this is very risky and even really experienced users will not dare to do it because it is so easy to make a small mistake and make the registry useless.

The better approach to cleaning the registry is to use a registry cleaner. It is true that there are many pros, who think that registry cleaners (and cleaning the registry as a whole) is a pointless operation but when one gets a reliable registry cleaner, the results are worth the time and effort.

The crucial step in cleaning the registry is to get a good registry cleaner. If a user doesn't get a reliable registry cleaner, the risk is that the registry cleaner will not fix the registry but make the mess even bigger. A good registry cleaner can really help and it does make sense to clean the registry once in a while.
